To establish India as a global hub for open source innovation, infrastructure, and indigenous technology creation, enabling institutions, enterprises, and individuals to collaboratively build solutions that serve societal, economic, and national interests.

BOSIF envisions a future where open source is not merely consumed or contributed to, but conceived, governed, and sustained from India for the world.


Mission

The mission of the Bharat Open Source Innovation Foundation (BOSIF) is to:

  • Promote the creation, adoption, and governance of open source software, platforms, and infrastructure originating from India.
  • Enable educational institutions to embed open source innovation, research, and practical contribution into their academic ecosystem.
  • Foster collaboration between academia, industry, startups, and the open source community.
  • Support students, researchers, and practitioners through mentorship, internships, scholarships, and incubation opportunities.
  • Establish transparent, ethical, and community-driven governance models for open source initiatives.

BOSIF operates as a neutral, not-for-profit platform, committed to long-term ecosystem development rather than short-term commercial outcomes.


Objectives

The objectives of the Bharat Open Source Innovation Foundation are aligned with its Memorandum of Association and are pursued strictly on a not-for-profit basis.

Promotion of Open Source Innovation

  • To promote the design, development, deployment, and governance of open source software, platforms, infrastructure, and systems.
  • To encourage the creation of indigenous open source alternatives addressing local and global needs.

Education, Skill Development, and Research

  • To collaborate with universities, colleges, and research institutions to integrate open source technologies into curricula, laboratories, and research programs.
  • To facilitate hands-on learning, innovation, and applied research in open source domains.

Student Enablement and Capacity Building

  • To support students through internships, mentorship programs, scholarships, fellowships, and practical exposure to real-world open source projects.
  • To nurture innovation-driven thinking among students across engineering, science, and technology disciplines.

Industry and Ecosystem Collaboration

  • To act as a neutral platform enabling collaboration between academia, industry, startups, and open source communities.
  • To facilitate responsible industry participation in open source initiatives without vendor dominance.

Incubation and Sustainability of Projects

  • To incubate, host, and govern open source projects ensuring long-term sustainability, transparency, and community ownership.
  • To establish clear project governance, contribution, and IP policies.

Ethical and Transparent Governance

  • To operate with transparency, accountability, and ethical governance in all activities of the Foundation.
  • To ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices governing Section-8 companies in India.

All activities of BOSIF are undertaken without profit motive, and any surplus generated is reinvested solely towards the objectives of the Foundation.
